Sewing Group Supplies Village Workers with Masks

Shorewood, Wisconsin | Helping

It was the middle of March and Shorewood WI village manager Rebecca Ewald urgently needed face masks for essential municipal employees. Masks were in high demand and short supply, but Rebecca knew of a group that might be able to help.

The request went to “Bring your Bag Shorewood”, a volunteer group well known for sewing reusable grocery bags for the community.

The group, organized by JoAnn, Rosie, and Meenal, was well known for sewing Boomerang Bags that community members could borrow. They had the skills, supplies and volunteers need to fill an “order” for 50 washable face masks. Over the next two weeks the three leaders and a group of volunteers produced and delivered over one hundred double layer cotton masks.

Next they made another batch for employees of Outpost Natural Foods followed by a delivery to the staff and residents of River Edge retirement community. They have also made 150 single-use masks for Medical College of Wisconsin which will be given to meal programs, shelters, and other places.

The group would welcome additional volunteers to sew more masks. Interested?  Email BringYourBagShorewood@gmail.com. The group currently has enough supplies for many more masks and “orders” keep coming in!
